Manager, Information Technology Operations

Reporting to the Director of I.T., I am responsible for the overall integrity, availability and confidentiality of the corporate I.T. systems and data.  I manage a staff of 7 individuals responsible for supporting the entire infrastructure and a network of 2,700 end-points including 1,000 desktops and over 100 servers distributed across 30 manufacturing and warehouse facilities located in the U.S. and Canada.

Selected Duties & Accomplishments:

  • Lead the development of policies and procedures related to business continuity planning, incident response and mitigation, malware remediation, vulnerability scanning and remediation.
  • Managed the development and implementation of global security policy, standards, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Directed the enforcement and implementation of information security policies and procedures in the multi-national corporation. Initiated, facilitated, and promoted numerous activities to enhance information security awareness within the organization utilizing periodic emails, “lunch & learn” presentations, online webinars and face-to-face training.
  • Responsible for the support and maintenance of the Windstream MPLS WAN connecting 23 remote sites and 7 VPN-connected sites and all related networking equipment including Cisco routers and switches, SonicWall firewalls and SSL-VPN devices, Peplink VPN devices, Microsoft TMG firewalls, Cisco/Linksys/Meraki wireless access points and IBM SiteProtector Intrusion Prevention systems.
  • Lead the implementation of a company-wide network and Allworx VOIP telephone system upgrade. Project included managing the upgrade of all WAN connection to 10 Mbps fiber connections, replacing all routers and switches and migrating to a cloud-based Windstream hosted Foritnet NGFW.
  • Managed the implementation of satellite systems at each of the 23 manufacturing facilities to act as a disaster recovery fail-over in the event the main MPLS WAN connection failure and modified the Cisco routers with necessary routing configuration changes to facilitate the fail-over.
  • Managed, maintained, supported and enhanced the corporate IT disaster recovery plan including the implementation of a disaster recovery site at a remote facility which included redundant systems, data communications, and data replication and testing plans.
  • Responsible for the support and maintenance of all security software and hardware including IBM Proventia IDS devices, McAfee anti-virus, anti-spam, and data loss prevention software using ePolicy Orchestrator, Websense Enterprise web filtering software, and Nessus vulnerability scanner.
  • Responsible for the monitoring and troubleshooting of all network problems using tools which included WhatsUp monitoring software, ManageEngine EventLog Analyzer, and ManageEngine Netflow Analyzer.
  • Data custodian responsible for designing, executing and maintaining backup strategies to ensure data availability and integrity.
  • Supervised team members whose duties included telephone and VOIP support, bar coding, desktop support, wireless and wired networking and security support activities.

Managed the Information Technology department of a $120 million company with an I.T. staff of three people which maintained and supported over 200 PC’s and 15 Novell and Windows NT/2000 based servers across the United States

Selected Duties & Accomplishments:

  • Managed the implementation of a corporate-wide WAN tying together 8 previously unconnected sites using a new frame relay network utilizing 3Com and CISCO routers.
  • Managed the implementation of QAD Mfg/Pro ERP software corporate-wide from a technology standpoint using Citrix WinFrame thin-client technology to deliver the QAD ERP application to the remote sites over the frame relay network. The ERP implementation was completed at all sites in 10 months allowing the company to realize a substantial return almost immediately.
  • Duties included analyzing, designing, and developing custom programs in the PROGRESS programming language to allow users greater access to data stored in the databases. Programs developed included custom inquires and reports to leverage the utility of existing data, and custom forms to allow printing of company documents in familiar formats. Managed numerous contract programmers when programming tasks were too large to handle individually.
  • Designed and implemented a corporate Intranet web-site where users could browse corporate information and post information for other employees to utilize thus allowing previously stand-alone sites and employees the opportunity to exchange information easily and at almost no cost. Company Intranet included Microsoft Exchange email servers for both internal and Internet email.
  • Developed a corporate I.T. disaster recovery plan that included off-site stand-by computers hosted by SunGard Data Recovery Services. Documented and tested the complete plan yearly to verify accuracy and functionality.
  • Managed the corporate Y2K compliance program in all areas included I.T., manufacturing and facilities. Developed contingency plans and managed the review of the compliance status of critical vendors and customers.

National Cement is the United States based division of the Paris, France based multi-national conglomerate Vicat SA. National Cement Company is a 625-employee, multi-state cement and concrete manufacturer and distributor with $200 million in sales.

Selected Duties & Accomplishments:

  • Managed and supported thirteen locations in four states with a user base of over one hundred, which included eight Netware, UNIX, and Windows NT based servers, eighty personal computers and twenty terminals.
  • Managed and supervised the activities of a group of contract programmers and consultants, which was as large as eight programmers at one point in the VARNET implementation project.
  • Successfully managed the downsizing of the company’s legacy systems of custom Business BASIC applications to a UNIX based PROGRESS 4GL relational database management system running VARNET application software. Implemented all financial modules and consolidated financial information from all locations on a single system for the first time allowing an increased visibility of the companies’ financial status in “real-time”.
  • Duties included analyzing, designing, and developing custom programs in the PROGRESS programming language to allow users greater access to, and better utilization of, data stored in the databases. Programs developed included custom inquiries, reports, and forms to allow printing of company documents in familiar formats.
  • Managed numerous contract programmers when programming tasks were too large to handle individually which included the implementation of a custom Order Processing system to allow quicker response to customer requirements and improved forecasting of product needs and market analysis.
  • Moved a manual spare parts inventory management system to a state-of-the-art database system providing a more complete and accurate view of the inventory liability.
  • Consolidated seven geographically separate computer sites into one central location by establishing a wide-area data network using a T-1 data circuit, DSU/CSU’s, 3COM NetBuilder Bridges, and 3COM Terminal Servers and utilizing the TCP/IP protocol.
  • Implemented Novell Netware 3.12 local area networks using 10BaseT wiring and IPX/SPX protocols. Installed all system and user software including Netware ODI drivers, Windows 3.1, and Microsoft application software.
